Privacy Policy

Mäx has no account, no analytics, no advertising, no tracking, and no third-party SDK that reports anything about you. Your progress stays on your phone. Two things use the internet, and both are described below: Mäx AI, which sends what you type to it to an AI provider to write the answer, and the download of the app’s natural voices.

What the app stores

Everything the app remembers is written to storage on your own device:

• the language you are learning and the language you read explanations in
• your level and daily goal
• which words you have saved or marked as known, and how well you know them
• which stories you have read, and the flashcard decks you have built
• how many minutes you have studied on each day, which is what the streak, the week chart and the six-month heatmap are drawn from
• your conversation with Mäx AI, kept so it is still there when you come back
• whether you have agreed to Mäx AI sending your questions to DeepSeek

None of it is backed up to us: there is no account and nothing to back it up to.

Mäx AI (the Tutor and the deck builder)

Mäx AI answers in two places: the Tutor screen, and “describe your deck” in the flashcard deck builder. The first time you use either, the app explains what is sent and asks for your permission; nothing is sent until you allow it.

When you then send a question or a deck description, that text — together with the language you are learning, the language you read explanations in, and your level — is sent to our server, which passes it to DeepSeek, an AI provider, to compose the answer. The deck builder also sends the app’s own word list, so the answer can only pick words the app contains. Nothing else goes with it: not your name, not your progress, not the words you have saved, and no identifier that ties the request to you.

We keep no record of the conversation. The transcript you see on the Tutor screen is stored on your device only, and clearing it or deleting the app removes it. DeepSeek processes the request under its own terms and privacy policy.

Voice downloads

The natural voices that read sentences, stories and words aloud are recorded ahead of time and downloaded in the background from our static server, for the course you are learning. Only the files are requested; nothing about you or your progress is sent. Until a voice has downloaded, the app uses your device’s own voice.

Apart from Mäx AI and the voice downloads, the app makes no network requests: every exercise works offline.

Microphone and speech recognition

The speaking drill is the only feature that uses the microphone, and only while you are actively using it. When you tap the microphone button, iOS listens and converts what you said to text so the app can compare it with the sentence on screen.

Where iOS supports on-device recognition for your language, that conversion happens entirely on your phone. For some languages iOS instead sends the audio to Apple’s own speech recognition service; that transfer is made by iOS, is governed by Apple’s privacy policy, and is the same mechanism used by dictation on the system keyboard.

In neither case does Mäx record, store or transmit audio. The recognised text is compared, scored and discarded. If you decline the microphone permission, the speaking drill explains that and the rest of the app carries on working.

Children

The app is suitable for all ages. It asks for no name, age or contact details, and Mäx AI only ever receives what someone chooses to type to it, after agreeing to that.

Deleting your data

Two ways, both immediate and complete:

• Settings → Reset progress inside the app clears saved words, streak, history, XP and the Mäx AI conversation.
• Deleting the app removes everything, since all of it lives inside the app’s own storage.

There is no copy anywhere else, so there is nothing to request from us and nothing to revoke.

Changes

If this policy ever changes, the new version will be published here and the date at the top updated. A change that materially affects what is collected would ship alongside an app update describing it.
